  • 150 g flour
  • 60 g unsalted butter
  • 60 g granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1 tbsp lemon zest
  • 200 ml water
  • vegetable oil

Instructions for homemade churros

To prepare churros, place a saucepan over high-heat and add the water, butter and a pinch of salt to it. When the butter is melted, turn off the heat and add the flour and stir with a silicone spatula until it is completely incorporated.

Then transfer the batter to a large bowl and let it cool for 10 minutes. After that, add the egg and lemon zest to the batter and mix well until they are completely combined.

Now transfer the batter to a piping bag fitted with a large open star tip. Then in a saucepan over medium-heat, add enough oil and carefully pipe churros into long ropes and use a knife to cut off the dough from piping bag. Deep fry churros until they are golden brown and crisp, about 2 to 3 minutes. Then drain fried churros on a paper towel-lined plate for a few seconds.

After that, mix the cinnamon and granulated sugar in a bowl and roll churros into it while they are still warm.

Note:

It is important to add the egg to the batter when it is cool. And if you prefer, instead of lemon zest you can add vanilla extract to churros.
